AW Kurton Ltd was founded by Arthur William Kurton in the late 1950s after leaving the Royal Navy where skills he learnt in the ship yards of his home town Liverpool were put to good use managing small shipyards in Africa manufacturing M.L’s.
On leaving the Navy Arthur went into business with a Navy colleague from Gloucester where they set up small plumbing and heating business after a few years the Navy pals went their separate ways leaving Arthur to continue trading as A.W Kurton Ltd forming a limited company of that name on the 7th of February 1963.
Through the Sixties and Seventies the company thrived specialising in installing central heating systems within private homes around Gloucestershire Worcestershire and Oxfordshire in order to control the ever increasing volumes of work separate companies were formed and run by managers drawn from within AW Kurton Ltd.
The new companies were:
These companies along with A.W Kurton Ltd continued to prosper; Arthur formed a further company G. W. Heating Ltd, specifically to deal with the large volume of work being carried out on behalf British Gas. At this time Mr Macey and Mr Wixon made offers to buy the companies they ran, these offers were accepted and both companies continued to operate successfully for a number of years.
In 1977 Arthur was joined by his son Michael Kurton who had served his time as an apprentice with British Gas, during the 1980s Michael slowly changed G. W. heating to a service and maintenance company dealing with AW Kurton's after sales and building a service customer base of its own. A.W Kurton ltd launched a new corporate image in the early 1980’s and became known as Kurtons Mechanical Services Engineers.
With an ever diminishing domestic central heating market Michael and his father moved Kurton’s into the commercial sector specialising in plumbing and heating installations in public houses forming a close working relationship with Whitbread PLC for whom Kurton's later became a partnered contractor, installing systems within their new build chain of Brewers Fayre public houses and Travel Inn hotels
In 1986 at the age of 65 Arthur retired leaving his son Michael to continue running AW Kurton Ltd and G. W. Heating Ltd, the companies continued to build a reputation within the leisure industry and started working nationally with companies such as Whitbread, Allied Domecq, Bass, S. A.
